|London Wed 11th May|
New approach - whenever, wherever I feel like writing. No rules, no structure, no format.
Arrived in London totally disoriented, sense of culture shock and jetlag combined.
I thought I knew at the time how extraordinary Nida was, but it's really only becoming clear now.
Nowhere near able to articulate it - will have to filter for a while and see what comes through later.
Absolutely unable to deal with even the most basic things yesterday - like looking at a bus map online, so walked up the road with Miga and he took out some money for me (lost my bankcard along with some essential pieces of my heart, mind and soul back in Lithuania) then directed me to either the 21 bus going via London Bridge or the 436 for Baker St. No prizes for guessing which one I chose :)
Quite enjoyed my intuitive pyschogeographic derive through the london streets - decided that I'm only going to take buses here this week (ok except one train to Kingston and back to Gatwick) because they're so big and red and shiny, you get to see the city, I hate the tube, and bus pass only £17.00
So at least when I run out of cash - as is inevitable in these situations, I find - it's still possible to go visit someone who may be happy to feed me! Called my bank manager and he promised to transfer virtual money to the credit/debit card which has somehow evaporated from my online banking - I've never had such a personal relationship with a bank manager before, apparently unusual even in Germany.
Anyway, back to here and now - I kick myself for letting slip some of the moments in Nida when I most wanted to be present, and letting other places or impulses take over. Obscure, I know, and no you're not getting an explanation. Free form rambling is the order of the day...
And so, I took the 21 bus to London Bridge, found a connection to Shoreditch - 48 - and landed exactly where I needed to pick up the keys for Mika's house from Zoba, who is part of 'the people speak' team, and we met in Berlin after I chatted with Saul at the transmediale traces tea lounge.
Mikey showed me some of their talkaoke previous work - think tank at tate modern - and gave promotional material, and we talked about possibility for connecting and making a hub in Berlin.
This is part of my new project - desire lines - entirely off the map, taking unofficial paths, informal unstructures to link people and places I like and help make interesting things happen. Have to work on that bla but the basic idea is that my main strength in life is connecting - with people and then connecting those people with other people - and since I've developed this extraordinary network and have no resources or desire to create an organisational framework or be part of an existing institution (thanks again to traces for teaching me extremely clearly the value of choosing who you give your time and energy to work with) I'm going to make it completely in the way I feel inspired to and only work with people who really are aligned and in a genuine flow/congruence. So many ideas and plans already coming together with this, very excited to see what forms and shapes it will take.
Wandered off down towards Hackney Rd and stumbled into a bar with psychedelic 3D designs on the walls - they give you 3D glasses for the full effect - lay on the couch in the sun drinking my latte, reading all the event fliers and uber-hip local newsletter... and felt like I was tripping. Where are my error boys with the golden hands now?!
Came back home to Peckham, talked with Fiona about ideas - she gave me the name 'desire lines' after our picnic at the Russian border, where I enjoyed the 'cognitive paths' on the map, told me that in the UK they're called desire lines and also some interesting talk/lecture I need to look up.
She's very excited about organising an art/science truly interdisciplinary collaboration with Nida, and it's been so beautiful to land here and still have that connection to the experience, not to mention being so well cared for, emotionally and physically. Think if I had gone straight to Mika's and been on my own for the past two days I would have just curled up into a tiny ball and sobbed for 48 hours.
No wonder I couldn't deal with finding my way around yesterday - here are all the pages I currently have open to try and navigate various events, meetings, new home and dinner:
and conceptually there's also pirate camp: http://www.artcitizens.net/notice/list/id/1088
an art sleep-in: http://stphilips.tumblr.com/
some work contacts I should follow-up: http://www.arup.com/Services/Acoustic_Consulting.aspx/
and sonic maze who now want a DVD for the show which is apparently on saturday not sunday so I have to resend to everyone: http://www.netaudiolondon.org/2011/event/sonic-maze
Totally overwhelmed by having so many places to go and choices to make - simplicity was nice.
Spent 40 minutes on the phone with Philippa, trying to figure out where to meet - finally decided on the Marksman Pub in Hackney, since those hipster cafes tend not to open during the day or week - fleapit, jones dairy, and the taste of bitter love had closed down completely, luckily P was checking the opening times - but we'll try and make it to treacle for over-priced artisan cupcakes :)
Then maybe the bus - 26, my new favourite - down to Waterloo and check out Hayward Gallery - sadly Tracey Emin show opens the day after I leave, but something on now about 'home'.
And that's where I'll leave you - demented, delirious but still functioning. Almost.
